Camtasia Studio 7 – Sneak Peek, Cursor Effects !!!

| March 23, 2010

Howdy Ya’All,

Thanks for riding in and checking the ranch for new updates. Today we will show you the newest sneak peek of Camtasia Studio 7 from TechSmith. Yippy! They have added some new cursor effects options while in the edit mode only, not live while recording, maybe next version. This will definitely help your viewers follow along better and also make things nicer in the editing mode for us end-users (Video Content Creators). Things like visualizing clicks, enlarging the mouse cursor, and one of my favorites, making the cursor a spotlight. Check the video out below for the new options and the sneak peek:

Hold on partner! I forgot to tell you that they added a new feature to the timeline for the cursor. Great idea, it will allow us to place the cursor effects more precisely on our video creations. You can also choose not to have the cursor appear at all.

Thanks to the Great People at TechSmith for listening to us end-users and the quick responses from their most excellent support department. That is what makes them right out #1 to myself and my ranch hands here. Keep up the great work Ya’All!

Getting Smaller Video Files

| March 9, 2010

How do you get small video files? Well that is a hard question to answer. There are many things that make a video file large. Multiple transitions, callouts, zoom and pans, and as well as audio will increase the size of the video. The size in which you produce the video will also increase it. A 340×280 video is going to be much smaller than a 800×600 video. Then selection is based on the need for the video. Will this be shown on a website, disk, or something else? For me I typically produce my videos in mp4 or flv formats, but that is because I create videos for web sites mostly. To make my videos smaller in Camtasia Studio I will lower the Frame rate to below 10 and the key frame every 5 seconds. By doing this you are capturing less keyframes so, less toward the end size. There is a trade off here though and that can be quality. Lowering the frame rate only works well with videos that do not have many animations like fade-in and out of callouts and zooms.

Another area to cut back on is the audio settings. You don’t need to have it set for more than 64 kbps. 128 is CD quality, but does your presentation really need that? You have to decide.

You have to find a balance. The more you pack in the bigger and there is not much you can do about that. To speed up download times split the videos into multiple video, but have the player play them in sequence. The viewer won’t realize it most of the time.

I hope that gave you some insight.

Amazon S3 and WordPress

| March 1, 2010

In our last article I talked about using Amazon S3 to host your videos created by Camtasia Studio.  This method is easy when you are using a normal website and can just link to the video’s html page, which plays the movie.  But, what if you use something a little different like WordPress?

WordPress sites have become very popular over the years.  They are easy to build and customizable to work with most types of sites.  They allow for blogging like this and their ability to easily create RSS feeds to keep your readers up to date makes it appealing.  Now, combining  WordPress and Camtasia Studio produced videos can be a little challenging for the novice web designers.  Camtasia Studio, when it produces a video for the internet produces multiple files to include its very own html file.  In order to play the video it uses each file to add the Camtasia Studio specific items like callouts and captions.  Because of these extra files you can not just use a video plugin to show your video.  Well I guess you can if you want to lose your hotspots and interactivity.  This is where you need a little knowledge of embedding flash files.

First, you need a place to host your videos.  Amazon S3 is just one.  For more on this read our previous article Camtasia Studio and Amazon S3.  Once you have your videos uploaded you need to add them to your post on your WordPress site.  You can do this by using the Flash Player embedded coding.  Now I know what you are saying, “I am not a webmaster and don’t know what code to use!”  Well what if I told you there is a website that can do the majority of the work.  You need the SWFObject v2.0 HTML and JavaScript generator.  This site will generate the needed coding to add to your blog.  It is that easy.

The following video was added to this post using the same generator and is hosted on my Amazon S3 account.  The video also shows you just how to do this.
